MICHAEL'S STORY

Michael grew up in Selma, Alabama where he attended Dallas County High School.  While excelling in athletics, academics remained a priority.  Graduating at the top of his high school class, Michael was heavily recruited and chose George Tech where he majored in Business Management.  A hard worker on and off the field, Michael earned All-American honors from American Football Coaches Association and first team All ACC honors just to name a few.  The 6’7” Johnson started only one year at Tech.  In one year as a starter the talented playmaker was able to amass nine sacks and force 10 fumbles.  Over 15 of his tackles were for losses.  In 2009, Michael was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals as a defensive end.  During Michael’s first season, he played all 16 games, including the Wild Card playoff.  He ended his rookie season with 16 tackles and 3 sacks.  He led the team in passes defended with 5.  The second year player who was drafted in the third round has now been moved from defensive end in 2009 to linebacker in 2010.

Michael believes the success of an exceptional athlete comes from building a strong educational foundation.  Michael’s foundation, MJ93 Fund, was established to support underprivileged children in academics and athletics through mentoring, tutoring and camps.  Through these services it is his aspiration to prepare students for post secondary education.  The statistics of not having that strong educational foundation is astounding.

  • Less than 5% of high school athletes go on to become college athletes
  • Less than 2% of college athletes go on to play professional sports
  • 78% of NFL players are bankrupt or in severe financial distress within 2 years of retirement
  • 60% of former NBA players are broke

Michael hopes to educate and encourage children and families through the MJ93 Fund.  The MJ93 Fund is a tool to secure donations that will provide resources to help children excel on and off the field.  Michael continues to build his career on these simple steps:
